ATTRACTIONS

Union Square
Extends from 14th to 18th Streets
and Broadway to Park Avenue
New York NY

Named in the early 19th Century because of the junction of two primary roads, the Boston Post Rd and the Albany Post Rd (both of which have been renamed a few times since) the park grew from a small, fenced oval to a rather elaborate park now protected as a National Landmark. It recently underwent a $2.6 million renovation complete with new gardens. Made well known through the 20th Century as a political rallying point - first for the labor movement and later in opposition to the Viet Nam war, the park fell into disrepair and lax law-enforcement and became the focus of illegal drug sales and use. A change in political administration placed a spotlight on that problem and now, all cleaned up, it is ready to be enjoyed in the 21st Century.
