| Almost
every parent is familiar with the plaintive, "Are we there,
yet?" Now you can take your kids on a little jaunt where 'getting
there' may well be more fun than 'being there'.
Departing from the
tip of lower Manhattan, the Staten Island Ferry trundles slowly away from
Manhattan giving a splendid view of the city. You'll pass Governor's
Island (Fort Jay), Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty and dock at
Staten Island about 25 minutes later. Not only is the ride thrilling for
kids (including the 'bigger' ones), it is FREE!.
At the Staten Island
ferry terminal board the S-74 bus (no, it's not free) and take it to St.
Patricks Place (on Richmond Rd). You are at Historic Richmond Town,
founded in 1690 and restored to exhibit the buildings, artifacts and life
styles of folks here over the last 300+ years. |
Virginia
has its Williamsburg; New York has Richmond Town. The many guides (one or
more are assigned to each building) are dressed in period clothing and
will narrate their interesting stories as though those historical times
were the present. Many school groups tour Richmond Town so the narratives
are designed for children. And the children do seem to enjoy the
experience.
There are special
days, too, when certain seasons are celebrated (e.g., Labor Day). The Town
is a lot more crowded then, of course, but certainly you've seen worse.
