| It's
a building, it's a sculpture, it's a landmark...it's the great swansong of
Frank Lloyd Wright: the Guggenheim Museum.
Though an 'art
museum', the Guggenheim Museum is worth a look even if you hate art.
Facing Central Park, it looms over the park and yet blends as any statue
might - except, of course, it is many times larger.
This continuous
circular ramp sits like a coiled spring, ready to pop up into space at any
moment. But the view from the inside is even more overwhelming, almost
dwarfing the exhibits it is meant to display.
|
Inside,
you walk up this gigantic spiral under a dome which seems to float above
the building. Self-guided audio tours are available (and strongly
recommended for this museum is huge!).
Works of 19th and
20th Century artists are the principal works on display but there are
always many 'temporary' exhibits. So, whether you are there to see Frank
Lloyd Wright's work of art - or the works of the many other artists, there
is bound to be something of interest.
