BINGHAMTON
AREA ATTRACTIONS

Visitors' Center - From I-81 take exit 4 to get on the Brandywine Freeway (NY-7 southbound to downtown). The freeway ends for a bit and then, at the split of NY-7 and NY-363, the Brandywine Freeway resumes (stay to the right to get back on the freeway). Take the first exit (Court Street - to US-11) and, at the end of the off-ramp, turn left onto Court Street (US-11). Follow Court Street to the Broome County Convention and Visitor's Bureau at 49 Court Street (their office are on the 2nd Floor).
For more information, phone 1-800-836-6740 (toll free).

Our favorite hotel in Binghamton is the Super 8 right off I-81 exit 5. Rooms are $40 all year except for a couple days in May and October. Rooms include dataports (handy if you bring along your notebook computer as we always do), big desks, good lighting and king-size beds (doubles available). The hotel is in a quiet, mostly residential neighborhood but convenient to downtown, IBM, etc..

Cutler Botanic Gardens - These beautiful gardens, operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension, are open for self-guided tours. The gazebo in the center is an especially nice touch.

From I-81 take exit 5 and turn right onto US-11 (Upper Front Street) at the end of the off-ramp. The parking area is at 840 Upper Front Street (at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County).

Discovery Center - A very nice museum with many 'hands-on' exhibits designed especially for children (preschool through age 8).
Open Tuesday through Friday from 10a to 4p; Saturdays from 10a to 5p and Sundays from noon to 5p. Currently, they are open until 8p the first Friday of every month plus reduced admission after 4p. Admission - and here is a switch - adults $4; kids from 2 through 16, $5. If you have 4 or more kids (your own) you can all get in for a $20 fee.
For more information, phone 1-607-773-8661 or visit their web site:

From I-81 take exit 4-S (NY-7) to go southbound on the Brandywine Freeway. The freeway quits and, at the traffic light, move over one lane to left (NY-363) and go straight to get on the continuation of the Brandywine Freeway (NY-363). Continue on the freeway to the NY-434 exit. Follow 434 over the Susquehanna River Bridge. 434 makes a bend to the right where it becomes the Vestal Pkwy. Get into the far left lane as soon as safety permits and, at Washington Street (another traffic light) turn left. Follow Washington to the end of the road and turn left onto Morgan Road. Turn into the Ross Park Zoo drive (on your right) and then bear left to get to the Discovery Center. Address: 60 Morgan Road.

Roberson Museum and Science Center and Link Planetarium - This museum is well endowed with a variety of art plus science exhibits (some 'hands-on') and even a planetarium.
One special (temporary) exhibit of note is their review of Carousels (see also:
Ross Park Zoo and Carousel Exhibit). This exhibit also reviews the history of the six Herschell carousels which you can see - and ride - at the Zoo. The Heritage Area Visitor Information Center is also located here near the entrance.
Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30a to 4:30p. Thursdays they stay open until 8p during the summer season. Admission: $6; students and seniors, $4.
For current schedules and other information, phone 1-607-772-0660 or visit their web site:

Continue to the end of this segment of the Brandywine Freeway and then continue on Shore Drive, crossing the Chenango River bridge, to the intersection of Front Street. Turn right onto Front Street and the Museum is about 100 yards from the intersection at 30 Front Street.

Ross Park Zoo and Carousel Exhibit - If you have children in the car, age 4 to 94, this is a must stop. While the zoo has all the usual animals, tigers, penguins, bears, wolves, and much, much more, the real highlight is the six spectacular Herschell carousels. You can learn all about their history and construction at a spec9al exhibit now at the Roberson Museum and Science Center.
