American Museum of Natural History
Central Park West and 79th Street
New York City NY
212-769-5606

Museums used to be gloomy, stuffy places that seemed to be of interest to other people (whoever they were). This has changed over the decades. Now, most museums are exciting, full of life and offer a welcome education to the world around us. The American Museum of Natural History was one of the very early exceptions to drabness: it wasn't. It was exciting in the 40s and is even better now! If you are a visitor to New York City, this must be a high priority stop. If you live here, it is about time you got introduced to this place.

The Museum opens its doors at 10a every day. It closes at 5:45 every day except Friday and Saturday which enjoy extended hours until 8:45p. (They are closed Thanksgiving and Christmas days.)

So, what's so exciting about the AMNH? Here are some highlights. 16 February 2002 a new Space Show will open. If you didn't know, the AMNH also operates the Hayden Planetarium which is a space show in itself. So now you get both barrels.

How about a colorful garden populated with over 500 beautiful tropical butterflies? They will even show you how you can build your own garden to attract the many kinds of butterflies around your own home.

Or, if you're more 'down-to-earth' and, if you like jazz, the first Friday evening of every month you can enjoy a great jazz concert in the Rose Center. The acoustics are perfect! And enjoy mouthwatering tapas and wine and other beverages. Seating begins at 5:15 p.m., and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. (Hour-long sets start at 6p and 7:30p)

So those didn't excite you? How Sea Monsters? View this stunning 40 minute, large-format film, Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure, exposes the virtually unknown world of the 'other' dinosaurs, - reptiles of the sea that lived some 80 million years ago. Shows daily in the LeFrak Theater every hour on the half hour from 10:30a to 4:30p.

The Museum has a very informative web site which includes complete directions by the various available modes of transportation. View it at: www.amnh.org
