GRANTS

| El Malpais National Conservation Area At exit 89 of I-40, just 8 miles east of Grants, is NM-117, the access route to El Malpais National Conservation Area. The Visitor center is about 9 miles south of the Interstate and is open from 8:30a to 4:30p every day except New Year’s day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Several geologic features preserved in the NCA are well worth the slight detour: La Ventana Natural Arch and the El Malpais lava flows which includes such sights as the Hole-in-the-Wall, Chain of Craters, Big Tubes Area and Junction Cave. |
While most of the volcanic features are only accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicles with high clearance, horseback or foot, there are some roads safely traversed by normal passenger cars. The Sandstone Bluffs Overlook, for example, is accessed by a well maintained dirt road leading you to excellent vistas of the lava flows. For more information about this and the many other opportunities to visit this beautiful area and view its exceptional features, phone the Bureau of Land Management in Grants at 505-287-7911, or send an e-mail to malpais@nm.blm.gov. | Grants offers over a half-dozen excellent, economical places to stay. One, the Comfort Inn, boasts an indoor (heated) pool for those who wish to avoid the sun-induced broil under the New Mexico summer sun - or wish a warm-up in the winter (and it can get cold in January and February! |
