| Meridian
is the result of a far-sighted plantation owner and a lot of fortitude.
Though off to a good start just before the Civil War, it was leveled by
Union troops, started a come-back and then almost leveled again by the
1906 hurricane. Today it is a thriving community.
As with the rest of
Mississippi, there is a lot of history, here. There is the Merrehope
House, miraculously left standing after the Union Army leveled the city in
1864. Fully restored, it is viewable by visitors (905 M L King Dr).

If
you are still a kid at heart, though, there is the famous Dentzel Carousel
dating back to 1899 and, yes, it is still operating. (It is in Highland
Park at 41st Ave and 19th St. - take I-20 exit 153)
Country music fans
will want to visit the Jimmie Rodgers Museum (also in Highland Park). The
Father of Country Music hailed from this railroad center and many of his
personal item are on display.
Lake Tom Baily
(camping and boating) is just 8 miles east of town.
