| Gulfport
is, as the name implies, a seaport; in fact, it is the largest banana
seaport in North America. It is also a land of boardwalks and white sandy
beaches. Many folks are introduced to Gulfport because they came here for
a convention; Gulfport is a major convention center. That also means it
has ample facilities for everyone - even those who just came here to relax
and have fun.
If you came here with
kids in tow ("... are we there, yet?") stop by the Lynn Meadows
Discovery Center on Dolan Avenue (228-897-6039) and give the kids a good
opportunity to let off some steam. Talking robots, a real-live news studio
which allows the kids pretend they're part of the crew, - it is a fun
place and educating, too.

You
may also enjoy taking a half-day excursion to Ship Island. The 'tour'
departs from the Small Craft Harbor and costs around $16 - half price for
kids. Ship Island is one of a series of long, narrow barrier islands which
are now a part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Not only is Ship
Island important ecologically, it w has a lot of historical significance,
both during the war of 1812 (against the British) and the Civil War. (see:

will be one time when getting there is as much fun as being there.
Later, in the
evening, you may want to sample the excitement of the Grand
Casino Gulfport
or one of the other dozen or so casinos. Of course, you don't have to wait
until evening; they're going strong 24 hours a day.
