Blackbeard Island Nat'l Wildlife Refuge

Accessible only by boat, this 5,618 acre island refuge includes maritime forest, marsh and beach habitats and offers a variety of recreational activities year-round.

Bird watching is excellent throughout the year. Winters enable observation of waterfowl in the many freshwater pools and marshland, while the rest of the year is great for observing the songbirds in the maritime forest. Two archery hunts for deer are scheduled each year and fishing is open year-round.

McQueens Island Historic Trail

If you are a biker and looking for easy pedaling (no loose sand!), the McQueens Island Historic Trail is a seven-mile long, asphalt-paved trail situated on the old abandoned Savannah/ Tybee Railroad bed. As an added benefit, Fort Pulaski National Monument is located on the trail. The trail head is about half way between Savannah and Tybee Island just of US-80 and just east of the Bull River bridge.

Savannah Nat'l Wildlife Refuge

This nature preserve on the South Carolina border consists of more than 25,000 acres of freshwater marshes, tidal rivers and creeks. Besides an abundant population of wintering waterfowl and alligators and other reptiles the rest of the year, there is a lot of small game and some deer. Because this was once a rice plantation, there are many dikes which makes excellent trails. Bird watching is very popular here due to the very visible presence of many species.

Follow US-17 north from I-95 exit 109 to the Refuge.

Wassaw Nat'l Wildlife Refuge

Unlike most of Georgia's barrier islands, Wassaw has remain in virtually a primative state. Accessible only by boat - you must make your own arrangements - this is an excellent destination for those who wish to get out into nature and away from the hustle of civilized life :)

There is a extraordinarily broad range of wildlife on the island - even including the threatened loggerhead turtle. Birds, too, especially egrets and herons, are also in abundance; they like the privacy, too.
