16 Tips for Your Safety

The Daytona Beach Fire Department welcomes you to our City. Our goal is to help you have the greatest Spring Break ever. Please review the following safety tips:

1. Wear sunscreen when outdoors. At the beach, you get direct sun and reflected rays from the ocean and our beautiful white sand. It doesn’t take long to sunburn. Reapply sunscreen if you’ve been sweating or have gone in the water.

2. Drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquids to replace fluid loss.

3. Stay near the lifeguard towers while swimming.

4. Be aware of rip currents. They are narrow sections of surf with extra strong current away from the beach. They are too strong to swim against and take you quickly offshore. Swim parallel to shore until you are out of the strong current, then swim toward the beach. Don’t panic and never swim alone.

5. Jellyfish tentacles will cause an intense burning sensation. If you rub the affected skin area, it gets worse. Go directly to the lifeguard tower. He or she will know the first aid procedure to relieve the pain. Don;t cry out loud - it will greatly reduce your chance of impressing the opposite sex.

6. Watch out for traffic! Vehicles can drive on our beach. Observe the beach speed limit ... it’s 10 MPH.

7. Party sensibly. Don’t drink and drive! If some of your party drinks alcohol, please have a non-drinking designated driver. Buckle up - it’s the law!!!

8. Florida’s drinking age is 21. Daytona Beach enforces an open container law. No open alcoholic beverages are allowed on the streets. Don’t become an overnight guest at the county jail - you’ll miss all the fun!

9. Should a group member become intoxicated, never leave them alone. Watch out for their safety. If they pass out, make sure they sleep on their side to prevent choking. If their level of consciousness is too low to get a response, call 911. Please have a member in your group appointed as the designated adult.

10. There is a lot of traffic in the nightclub areas. Cross at the intersections. Drivers, please obey the speed limit and be alert for pedestrians.

11. Travel in groups and stay in lighted areas. Don't let any members of your party leave alone with strangers.

12. All cities have drug sales solicitors. They’re like cockroaches... you can’t get rid of all of them. The Daytona Beach Police Department does a great job of putting ours in jail. Report any drug dealers to the nearest officer or call 911.

13. Don’t block emergency access areas.

14. Don’t overcrowd elevators. Too much weight could cause a malfunction. Being stuck in an elevator will overexpose you to some really bad music!!

15. Don’t horseplay on the balconies!! Never sit on the railings. Keep both feet on the floor at all times. Balcony climbing can be fatal!

16. Call your parents at least once. It will surprise them and maybe they’ll send more money!

Sincerely,

Bill Gilliland
