| You've
heard of the giant stone statues that are the mystery of Easter Island.
You don't have to travel to the southern hemisphere to view giant stone
statues. Well, perhaps not stone but concrete.
Dr. Fox, a dentist
with a practice in Auburn, started creating these monoliths in the late
1960s. The story goes that all the towns folks hated them so much they
wouldn't allow the school busses to drive down his road. Okay, one of the
statues is of a naked man wrapped in chains but there was more to it than
that.

Time
has a way of resolving most issues and the attitude, today, toward Dr.
Fox's statues is quite different than it was thirty years ago. They even
have one of his giants, a 45 foot tall statue of a gold miner, in the
heart of downtown! And the town raised the money to pay him for it!
While you are on your
way to view the Underground Gold Miners' Museum in Alleghany, cruise by
Dr. Fox's house and enjoy the sight. Exit I-80 onto Hwy 49 North (towards
Grass Valley). Turn right at the 2nd traffic light then go another 2
blocks.
