Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve

The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Preserve, a private, not-for-profit preserve (not a national park) is a ‘community managed’ preserve. Interesting to note: it is managed by the Santa Elena High School as a student project!

Entrance fees are used for the protection and management of the Reserve and to provide higher quality education for local schools.

 While similar in most respects to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, the Santa Elena preserve straddles the Continental Divide. With some 7 miles of trails, a great view of the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal plus a lot less visitors, this may be a better choice of destinations. Because it is higher up the mountain it is cloudier and wetter than the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
