Viennese Architecture & Buildings

Once upon a time the 'inner city' - or old city - was surrounded by huge, defensive walls. In the 19th Century, then emperor Franz Joseph, feeling the walls were no longer needed, had them demolished. 

In place of the walls he had the Ringstraße built - a great, tree-lined boulevard which was soon lined with such imposing buildings as the State Opera, the Museums of Fine Arts and Natural History, Parliament, City Hall and Vienna University.

Obviously, there are a great many architectural sights to view. If you are content to view these famous structures from the outside - and enjoy biking - rent a bike and peddle. But don't miss the Ringstraße.
