| Vienna
is at the heart of Europe. In eastern Austria which is surrounded by
Germany, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland, it is also the
crossroad of many diverse cultures. Vienna was a very important shipping
point under the Romans, then, for many centuries, it was the political,
cultural and economic center of the Austrian Empire. This was followed by
another half-century of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Viennese consider
them selves as 'world citizens'. They thoroughly enjoy the 'good life' and
it is well expressed in their art and music, their architecture and even
in the city government.
If you are
expecting Vienna to be like other large cities, you're in for a shock.
This financial, business and cultural center transforms from the big city
atmosphere to a small town, time-to-go-to-sleep atmosphere shortly after
midnight's stroke of twelve.

Vienna
is virtually crime-free and there is a
conspicuous absence of homeless and street bums. Social responsibility of the government
and business community is probably unequalled - you don't even have to be
a 'citizen' to get excellent medical attention.
Most tourists
come to Vienna to taste the culture - and they certainly are not disappointed.
While Vienna may be most famous for its music, all the arts are firmly
established. Tourists from America are usually very interested in touring
the many, famous old buildings. A stay of several weeks would be required
to see all the ones open to tourists.
